Andaz 5th Avenue Introduces Newest Artist in Residence
New York (August 8, 2012) Andaz 5th Avenue will update their revolving art series, tbdARt, with original work by the hotel’s newest Artist in Residence, Steven Cogle. Between August 8 – 12, Cogle will transform the entryway of the bar downstairs as he illustrates his interpretation of cultural diversity in New York City. A unique feature of the ongoing art series is that guests and locals have the opportunity to witness and interact with the artist as the installations are created.
As a hotel with an ongoing commitment to ensure local artisans touch every aspect of the property, the Andaz 5th Avenue is proud to host Cogle who brings an artistic approach molded by his New York City upbringing. Cogle’s art will depict the Statue of Liberty enhanced by words in various languages. He has selected words from his diary documenting firsthand encounters with cultural diversity while working at the Statue of Liberty. Prior to tbdARt, Cogle’s work was most recently featured earlier this month at a Chelsea gallery in The Future is Now show.
“After two successful years, we are thrilled to kick off the third year of tbdARt with such creative artists,” says Cornelia Samara, General Manager at Andaz 5th Avenue. “Our revolving collection on the doors to the bar downstairs is one of the many ways in which we aim to bring local flair to the property and enhance the guest experience.”
Guests and locals are encouraged to visit each artist while they transform the doors. The progress of the artists’ work can be followed at the hotel’s tumblr site: http://andaz5thavenue.tumblr.com. As Andaz Artists in Residence, the artists live at the hotel while creating their pieces. Being across the street from the famous New York Public Library will be an especially inspiring experience for Cogle.
“As a kid, I would come to the New York Public Library to check out sketch books. This is where I received my art education. I didn’t go any art colleges – I would just come to the library. I’m especially excited to be creating art at the Andaz 5th Avenue, so close to where my journey started.”
The current Artist in Resident is Aimee Cavazzi, who illustrated her interpretation of New York City relating to the environment. Her piece that was completed on Earth Day will make way for Cogle’s creation which will debut on August 12th. As the tbdARt series continues throughout the year, Cogle’s work will be followed by returning Artist in Residence, CLAW Money.
In November, CLAW Money will create her rendition of New York City style on the entryway doors. Currently, CLAW Money’s work can be seen in the windows of the Lord & Taylor flagship store on Fifth Avenue.
