Built by  “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt to serve his shipping empire, New York’s central depot has been New York’s busiest crossroads since the 1870s. But it has only reached the status of a true leisure destination in the last decade.  Completely renovated in 1994, its celestial Main Course Sky Ceiling restored, Grand Central has added restaurants and cocktail lounges (including the exquisite, coffer-ceilinged 1920s private office and salon of tycoon John W. Campbell, now the chic Campbell Apartment cocktail lounge); the Grand Central Market offers specialty foods from local farmers and purveyors; specialty shops line the corridors. It’s one of New Yorkers’ favorite destinations, even if they don’t use it for its intended purpose – to go somewhere else.
